A great idea to help you in this assignment would be to check out NPR's very well done "This I Believe" section. There you can find great examples from the 1950s radio program of the same name hosted by the famous newsman Edward R. Murrow.

Besides seeing some strong examples of personal exposition and generating enthusiasm and ideas, you can even enter the final product of your essay to NPR to have it read nationally over the radio waves! Would not that be cool!?!
