Assignment: Class Polls

Students will take notes on how to enter labels and data into a spreadsheet in Excel and on how to create charts/graphs to visually represent the data. Students will gather data about the class using a "class poll" format.

Part 1:

Setting Up the Excel Spreadsheet

Show layout of Excel spreadsheet (rows, columns, menus, cells)

Discuss labels vs data vs formulas (functions)

Labeling a worksheet & entering data for each poll taken

Part 2:

Data Collection

The instructor will ask a series of questions and assign locations in the classroom for possible answer categories.

For each topic, the class will divide physically, then record the number of "votes" for each category on the big screen in Excel.

  • Boys / Girls
  • Freshmen / Upperclassmen (10s, 11s, 12s)
  • Public / Private School / Home School Last Year
  • Middle School Attended (Anacapa, Balboa, Cabrillo, DeAnza, other)
  • PE Requirement (Campus PE class - includes dance, YMCA and Maverick's; ISPE; sports dismissal; other)
  • Science Instructor (Akl, Anderson, Duston, other)

Part 3:

Data Representation and Analysis

Using the data collected, we will create a chart or graph- in a New Sheet - representing the data for each topic. We will have up to six charts/graphs in total.

Please take notes on how to:

  • Use a different style chart/graph for each poll topic.
  • Label and format each chart/graph in great detail .
  • Customize each chart/graph
    • using WordArt
    • experimenting with fill patterns/colors
    • adding clipart
    • utilizing images from the Internet
